Atelier Rotterdam offers a practical, real-life challenge to the UMSDU students, where they have to put into practice all the knowledge they have acquired during the previous modules.

The UMDSU1 students tackled the case of Dumasstraat, a problematic neighbourhood of Lombardijen, by proposing physical, as well as social interventions. They looked into the liveability aspect of this small neighbourhood and analyzed neighbourhoods' complexity from a physical, social and economic point of view.

The UMDSU2 Atelier focused on Capelle aan den Ijssel, a small satelite town to the east of Rotterdam. Although part of the Rotterdam area, Capelle is an independent municipality.

Within Capelle, the participants will challenge existing plans and propose alternatives for the Wiekslag, a social housing complex built in the 1960s and managed by Havensteder, one of Rotterdam’s largest housing associations (and the client for this project).

The focus of UMDSU3 was on the area known as Tarwewijk, in Rotterdam South. Tarwewijk is considered as one of the most dangerous neighborhoods of Rotterdam and is generally perceived as a bad place to live in.

The students had to find out what are the problems faced by its residents, how did these problems emerge, how to change the negative image associated with Tarwewijk and how to improve the quality of life for its inhabitants.
