ATELIER ROTTERDAM III
Tarwewijk
UMDSU3
Atelier Rotterdam offers a practical, real-life challenge to the UMSDU students, where they have to put into practice all the knowledge they have acquired during the previous modules. Each year the students are offered the opportunity to make a difference in Rotterdam, as real-life cases and issues have to be tackled in different neighborhoods. The focus of UMDSU3 was on the Tarwewijk.
"WHEN IS THE RIGHT TIME
TO TARWEWIJK?"
Tarwewijk is considered as one of the most dangerous neighborhoods of Rotterdam, and is generally perceived as a bad place to reside in. But what are the problems faced by its residents? How did these problems emerge? How to change the negative image associated with the Tarwewijk? How to improve live quality of its inhabitants? Those are the first questions the groups had to deal with, and from there they had to broaden their horizons and immerse themselves into another reality that they were used to.
The students were divided in six groups, so each group could focus on a specific thematic area. The students started with conducting desk and field research about the Tarwewijk and their thematic area.

BEFORE, I HEARD IT AS DANGEROUS, BUT I DID NOT SEEN ANYTHING YET. THIS PLACE HAS A REPUTATION, IS MORE ABOUT WHAT PEOPLE SAY"

PEOPLE ARE INTEGRATED WITHIN THEIR OWN CULTURE, THEY HAVE CLOSED GROUPS. I DIDN'T FEEL WELCOMED WHEN I ARRIVED IN TARWEWIJK"

After gathering data by exploring the neighborhood physically and on internet, surveying residents, and interviewing key people, the students used various tools, such as Problem Tree analysis, Stakeholder analysis, brainstorming sessions, and SMART objectives setting, to extrapolate core problems, causes, and consequences. Based on their findings, during the follow weeks, they proposed strategies and actions to accomplish the intended solutions.
